Curriculum Vision
At Carleton High School we believe that our curriculum should:
- Promote a love of learning where students enjoy learning; make good progress and achieve excellence.
- Develop confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
- Develop responsible citizens who can make a positive contribution to society.
- Increase the standards of literacy and numeracy for all students.
Our strategic intent is to develop a curriculum which:
- Creates an aspirational high achievement culture.
- Takes into account individual needs and styles.
- Allows everyone to experience success.
- Raises standards of attainment.
The fundamental principles that guide our curriculum are:
- Clear progress over 5 years accelerating student progress.
- Additional time is given to English and Mathematics to ensure that students have the essential skills needed for life and to access the full curriculum.
- Targeted support and additional challenge to ensure all students make at least national rates of progress.
- Ensure all students’ progress is in line with national expectations.
- Drop down days to address SMSC and aspirations.
- Additional time will be offered for sports, arts and catch-up through pour extra curricular programme.
KS3 CURRICULUM
During Years 7, 8 and 9 students will study a broad and balanced curriculum which includes English, maths and science. Students will also study a range of expressive arts subjects, geography, history, beliefs and ethics, computing, technology subjects, a modern foreign language and physical education. The number of hours allocated to each subject is included in the table below:

Students will start studying GCSE or equivalent courses in Year 10. These will include English (including English Literature), mathematics and science. Students will also study physical education and will choose four option subjects. The number of hours allocated to each subject is included in the table below:

Religious Education/SMSC
As part of our commitment to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC), students study belief and ethics at KS3 as part of the schools ‘learning for life’ programme. In addition, students also experience SMSC across other curriculum areas. Drop Down Days are also included in our annual timetable which allow for the Learning for Life curriculum to be delivered further to our students.
Enrichment
Students are provided with opportunities to add depth to their learning and develop personal skills through a varied enrichment programme. Students will have the chance to enjoy new experiences and consolidate their timetabled learning through this programme.
