As Head of School, I have great pleasure in welcoming you to Carleton High School.
Having started at the school in September 2018, it has been a privilege and honour to lead the school on its transformational journey to becoming an Ofsted ‘Good’ school and one of the most improved schools across the country. The journey we have been on is transformational and is a testament to all of the hard work and commitment of our amazing staff and students.
The July 2019 Ofsted inspection judged Carleton High School to be a ‘Good’ school. I am enormously proud of this for two reasons. Firstly, the journey of the school from special measures to good in 12 months is a significant achievement, which only a few schools nationally have accomplished - it rarely happens in the educational world. Secondly, this is the first time that Carleton High School has been judged a ‘Good’ school in 10 years. Students only have one opportunity to receive a first class education and I am delighted that the school is now providing a high-quality education that the students in our community deserve.
The inspectors recognised all of the excellent work which had taken place to transform the school - 'Leaders have significantly improved the school since the last inspection'. There are so many positive comments, such as:
‘There is a wealth of emotional and academic support’.
‘Pupils are courteous, polite and welcoming’.
‘Behaviour is a real strength of the school’.
I am pleased to say that our success last year did not stop there. Our GCSE results were the best in Carleton High School's history. The school achieved above national on all key headline measures, making Carleton High School one of the highest performing secondary schools in the Wakefield Local Authority for student progress, and one of the most improved schools across the country.
As we embark on a journey to outstanding, our mantra of Culture + Consistency = Excellence continues to be at the heart of everything that we do, which means that we do not put a ceiling on what our students can achieve. Staff do ‘whatever it takes’ to make sure all students receive a first class education and make outstanding progress, no matter what their starting point or circumstances. This really matters; academic results open doors for our young people. We aim to be consistent in our approach to everything that we do, so our standards are always high for all students in our care.
In addition, we are committed to caring for each and every student, nurturing their individual strengths and passions; we provide them with valuable opportunities for character development, leadership and educational visits.
Whether you are a prospective student, parent, teacher or an interested member of the local community, we would be delighted to meet you to discuss how Carleton High School could be part of your future. Please contact us if you have any questions, or if you would like to arrange a visit to see our school in action.
